blind spot

i have been driving again in jakarta for about a month now... one thing i notice, among all other traffic rules ignorance, drivers in jakarta do not seem to be aware of blind spot...

i remember years ago when i did my driving test in sydney, i tend to forget to turn my head to check the blind spot before changing lane... and because of that i keep failing the test until the fourth time!! at the time, i didnt know the danger of not checking them...

for you who doesnt know about blind spot when you're driving, lets take a minute to see if you can notice it... most people tend to think that the rear-view and side mirrors should cover all you need to check around your vehicle... truth is, there are spots that arent covered by those mirrors... these spots are on the side of your vehicle (about a metre or so from it) from behind the front seat to the back of the car... can you see them?...

not checking your blind spot can be very dangerous... last night i was driving in freeway when suddenly this car that was travelling on my left moving towards my car on high speed, and almost crash into my car... i was shocked, the driver of that car was probably no different... he obviously did not check his blind spot and was surprised to suddenly see my car there...

well, there are always two possibilities, its either he was a maniac driver, who knew the rules but could not be bothered to follow or a careless driver... i assume he was the latter one =)...

so guys... the moral of the story is to ALWAYS... ALWAYS check your blind spot when you are driving... i know, i know... good habits sometimes hard to develop... even after years driving in Australia, sometimes a friend will remind me to check my blind spot... but it is a good habit and important habit to have... lets avoid accidents from today...

safe driving everyone...
